Description and story
This blotter sheet features a repeating pattern of small black cat heads on a tan background. Known as the “Black Cats” design, it first appeared around 1981 and quickly became one of the most recognizable early blotter-style prints. Its visual style likely drew inspiration from vintage commercial graphics, subtly echoing popular novelty or fireworks branding of the era.
The small-format black cat heads are arranged in a clean, grid-like layout, creating a strong visual rhythm across the sheet. This minimalist yet striking design reflects the early evolution of blotter art as a folk-psychedelic medium—where repetition, symmetry, and playful symbolism added layers of meaning to decorative compositions.
Modern editions like this one are undipped and created purely for decorative and collectible use. With its retro aesthetic and cultural relevance, this sheet continues to be appreciated by art collectors and fans of graphic history alike.
