Description and story
The “Bicycle Ride 1943” blotter is one of the most iconic designs in blotter art history. It commemorates the famous bicycle ride taken by Dr. Albert Hofmann on April 19, 1943, after he first tested a compound he had synthesized. As he began feeling its effects, he decided to cycle home – a journey that would later be seen as a turning point in the story of altered states and inner exploration.
This blotter features a cartoon-style white figure riding a bicycle against a vivid background of snow-capped mountains, celestial symbols, and the year “1943” in red. The mountainous backdrop reflects Hofmann’s homeland, Switzerland, while the vibrant color palette and sky-themed imagery suggest the cosmic nature of the experience.
The design is both a tribute to Hofmann’s historic ride and a celebration of visionary exploration. It’s considered a nostalgic homage to the roots of alternative culture, widely appreciated by collectors and fans of symbolic paper art.
